The Gear IQ Method

Every product in every guide gets a single number, 1–100, built from five pillars. We weight them the way a hunter spends money: what it does in the woods first, what it costs you second.

01

Real-world performance

What it actually does on a hunt — not what the box says.

02

Hunter sentiment

What owners say after a season or three, including the one-star reviews.

03

Durability

Whether it survives weather, freeze-thaw, and being left out all year.

04

Value

What you get for the money, including the costs that show up later.

05

Standout features

The one thing it does better than anything else at the price.

In our kit We own it and run it — a first-hand take, trade-offs and all. Gear IQ ranked Scored by the method; not personally owned. Sent to test Provided by the brand — disclosed, never a paid placement.

How we work

A commission never buys a spot. Some links in these guides are affiliate links — AmbushIQ is a participant in the Amazon Associates Program, and as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. They pay us if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you, and they do not change a ranking, a score, or a single word of a review.

We verify before we publish. Prices, model names and specs are checked against manufacturer and retailer pages, and dated. Gear moves fast — a model gets superseded, a price closes out, so when something is stale we fix it in the open instead of quietly.

We say what we cut. Most guides name products that didn't make the list and explain why. A ranking with no losers isn't a ranking.

We say when we don't know. Where a claim can't be verified, we pull it instead of guessing. Where a score is close, we say the score is close.

No AI-written reviews. These guides are researched and written by us, then fact-checked. No invented staff writers, no stock-photo bylines. More on that, and on who we are, here.

Placement is set by the Gear IQ score and our own field use. Full terms in our affiliate disclosure.
